All of the children were bright-eyed and full of great stories for the Opening Ceremony. The 2nd term, which is full of events and also the longest, is finally underway.

After all of the help from parents we received for Crops Thanksgiving Day, the next big event on the schedule is Physical Festival. One event the kids love is the foot races. While the Junior class children all run very cutely, when it gets to Intermediates and Seniors, the children have a real desire to get faster, feeling awe towards fast classmates, and sadness when they can’t run fast themselves.

Speed in foot races is often determined between the time babies crawl, and begin to run at 3 years old. Lifestyle, exercise habits, and play time activities all contribute to this. If the muscles in the feet and toes aren’t properly nurtured, however, it is difficult to run very fast. Going barefoot and doing more activities that require a child to use their feet and toes in unison can increase familiarity, fitness, and coordination. The feet are sometimes referred to as the second heart; in that they need the power to push blood all the way back to the heart itself. Healthy feet improve blood circulation throughout the body.

Due to an increasing number of cars at home, and apartment housing, children and adults alike have to use their feet less and less. Cute and stylish shoes are also on the rise. But shoes of an unconventional shape or weight can actually negatively impact physical development. Children’s feet can change size radically when they are growing, so always stay aware of their size and encourage them to exercise their toes, too.

Recently, the importance of experiences had in early childhood are being re-examined with regards to their impact on a person’s health in life overall. It seems the security children feel when they are scared, “attachment”, has a big influence on their ability to function in society later. This might seem like an obvious thing, but as there aren’t any rules about it, more often than not there is too little security, or too much.

The 2nd term will probably have the children run into things they can’t do themselves, or have disagreements with their classmates, or form deeper relationships with friends. But all of these things lead to the children developing as people. While kids will seek to stay attached at home, it is important to not shower them with too much attention about it, but rather give them a base where they can feel safe, or be happy to return to if they have had a bad day. We look forward to serving you in the next term as well.
