It hasn’t been a very hot start to summer, but now the hot and sunny days are starting to increase in number. From tomorrow, summer holidays will start. While it went by in the blink of an eye for us as teachers, I’m sure that the experience was both long and precious for all of the young children involved.

Once, a monk made the following observation. As we get older, it begins to feel like the days pass by faster, but the truth is that our experiences up until the point has allowed us to respond to our daily challenges more easily, making things seem to pass faster. Compare this to our childhood, where everything we experience is for the first time, and the passage of time feels normal. While an adult may feel like “Wow, half a year has already passed.”, the children are having fun, and talking about what they do any number of times.

The summer vacation that takes place across July and August may feel like a passage of time, for the children, this is a time that can see them grow by leaps and bounds. It is also a great chance to have experiences together, as a family. Things like travel, or attending events are great, but even little things like taking a walk together, talking a lot, and more are good too. It might feel like a small thing, but it is very precious for the kids.

Last month, we talked about nurturing children’s curiosity. One great tool for doing this is picture books and dictionaries. These books are built to make children think “I want to know more.” While just looking at the pictures is fun, wondering “What is this called? What’s written here? Wow, look at this!” leads to lots of anticipation. It also helps children remember letters and words. Good picture books are great for three year olds, who begin asking “Why?” in earnest.

Even children that aren’t interested in books will take an interest when they see parents using them. Something as simple as “What’s this flower? Let’s check it when we go home!”. Children can research countries they hear about, planets, bugs, animals… a whole world of knowledge is available. It is also a great chance to learn something at home together. If possible, it would be great to give children a chance to see the real things, too.

In closing, I would like to express all of our thanks for the Kids Carnival on July 6th. It is a big event that puts a lot of pressure on parents to prepare for. For the kids, it is great to experience something that their own parents put effort into preparing, and it was obvious in their smiling faces. I hope to see everyone in good spirits come the second term.
