The heat of summer is in full swing as we move in to July. Thank you very much for attending the two Open Class Days in June. It was great to see the children being attentive and enjoying themselves, even with family members present. It was a chance to see them in a different environment, and how they react to new situations. Many children are becoming able to enjoy themselves at kindergarten, growing along with their friends.

Recently, the topic of “resilience” has come to the forefront in child-rearing. It is the opposite of stress, and applies to a child being able to resist the effect of outside forces. It is often used to describe poverty, or a difficult environment, but has come to take an extended meaning recently, and be applied to any situation where children meet adversity. Everyone has times in their daily life where they think “I must try my best!” At those times, the need for “energy to push back” is at a premium.

Without this ability, and faced with a difficult situation, many turn to the simple route, feeling it is easier. Others think “This is impossible for me!” and give up. This leads to children dropping out of school, or quitting soon after getting a job. It has been said the prime time to develop this “resilience” is in the years from birth until six years old. The key to developing this ability at such an early age lies in assuring and reassuring, giving children the feeling that no matter what happens, if they don’t give up, it can be overcome.

A big source of personal resilience that comes in early childhood is the love received from parents. More than anything though, it can be increased through more physical contact. Children that love to be held realize that “Being in contact with others is both comforting and safe.” as well as “There is a value to my existence.” The amount of love provided can lead to things like preventing a short temper, for example. Giving a big hug, a pat on the head, or a nice pat on the back can go a long way in helping children feel secure and acknowledged. It can communicate “I understand you.” as well as “I see what you are doing.”

For July, with the goal of building “self-confidence” and “resilience”, there will be overnight stay events. Seniors will travel to Niseko, while Intermediates spend a night at IYK. Interested Junior students can join the evening event that is planned. In August, there will be an All-English overnight stay for Immersion Seniors and Intermediates. All of these are done with the aim of fostering a bit more belief and confidence in the children as individuals. Please send them on the trips with anticipation of their growth upon return.

Please take the chance to have lots of contact with your child. The time where you can play together with them only lasts a few more years. Let this summer be a fun one, making the most of the growth that physical contact can bring.
