The trees have begun to flower, with the beautiful lilacs blooming, as Sapporo enters its most enjoyable season of the year. The children are greatly enjoying the chance to play outside, and tend to the kindergarten garden happily. They can even be found making great observations about the season and how it has come to change, saying things like “The clouds are fluffy today.”, and “This soil is nice and warm.”

Before discussing this month’s theme, I would like to take the chance on behalf of all of us at the kindergarten to thank you all as parents for affording us the time to come and visit you at home, and as such learn more about your children, during the home visitation period. The kind words and comments you had for us were very wonderful. While our curriculum here includes subjects like English, music, art, and exercise, our thinking isn’t only devoted to simply doing tasks in the pursuit of a goal.
We aim to improve the children’s practical intelligence in a natural environment, where they can grow both physically and as individuals, forming relationships and gaining knowledge. We aim to foster more “Sentiment”, “Willingness”, and “Attitude” with the goal of “Independence, cooperation, and care for their fellow people.” We are working to provide an environment where the children can grow alongside their friends and teachers without any anxiety.

Coming in June, there will be “Mouth Care Week” from June 4th through June 10th. One magazine, in a piece about personal health, contained the line: “I wish I’d had a dental check.” “Teeth” are not just something we use to enjoy delicious food, but let us get nutrition from said food as well. Actually, their job doesn’t stop there, as our teeth are used in various other activities like thinking about things, during writing, or carrying something heavy, and even running. Bad cavities or teeth alignment can increase stress and lead to various diseases. It can also lead to other physical issues like nasal problems, headaches, sore shoulders, and even dull intelligence.

For generations, people have been saying “rice gets sweet the more you chew it.” Chewing a lot makes the food more flavorful, but also has the added benefit of fixing the acidic balance in our mouths themselves. A mouth so clean that cavities won’t appear even without brushing is the result of saliva supported by the power of chewing. Good chewing is the first step towards good dental health. Children that eat with their mouth open, breathe with their mouth, drool easily, or spill when they are chewing sometimes lack proper mouth muscles. Developing these muscles through “Chewing” and “Swallowing” can even lead to “Proper pronunciation”. Intermediates and Seniors are slowly losing their baby teeth, and gaining their adult ones. Let’s start with a gargle big enough to puff out their cheeks and look to power up their chewing!
