The days are slowly getting warmer, and the season has come where the children are filled with “determination”, “curiosity”, and “action”.

It has been three weeks already since the Opening and Entrance Ceremonies, but the older children have already begun to come into their new roles. They’ve begun to find friends and activities that they enjoy. They all look very mature in helping their junior friends with things like putting on their shoes or using the stairs. Those same junior friends are trying their best to sit still and listen, while following a different schedule and trying to remember their new teachers and friends’ names. Please take ease in their progress and give them lots of support.

May has a long vacation, along with the beginning of the full-day education schedule, which can be quite a task for the children to overcome, both physically and in terms of concentration. It can be easy for them to grow fatigued. Please give them a chance at home to rest accordingly.

The Entrance and Opening Ceremonies this year saw the principal’s message of “Early to bed, early to rise, a warm greeting, and breakfast.” once again instilled in the children. The Japanese proverb “Mitsugo no tamashi hyaku made” means that the things learned as a child, more specifically a kindergartener, form how we act as people for the rest of our life. This time period is a once in a lifetime chance for the children to learn, grow, and be taught. The base for these things comes from the basic human desires of “hunger” and “sleep”.

People need 3 meals to give them enough energy for a day, but the one meal children can’t miss is breakfast. The sugars contained in food give energy for thinking and movement, and without them it can lead to low blood sugar, and a lack of desire to do anything. In order to have a good breakfast, it’s important to wake up early. Growth hormones are most active from 9PM to 12AM. These hormones promote basic bodily processes, and form new bone and muscles, as well as contribute to intelligence. After midnight, the body produces more melatonin, responsible for sexual maturity in children. A lack of this can lead to night tantrums, hermitic tendencies, or violence. At around 4AM cortisol is produced. This hormone relieves fatigue and improves moods as well. It can be integral to waking up happy. So a good night’s sleep can lead to a great greeting in the morning, an important part of interpersonal relationships. Giving a good greeting and having good manners can lead to being a good international citizen later in life.

The principal’s slogan message touches on the themes of “breakfast”, “waking up early”, and “good morning”. This coming May will be “Greeting Month”, where we as teachers will make an effort to greet each child individually at every turn. We ask for your cooperation and aid in raising happy, healthy children.
